The Arts & Clay Company is dedicated to the renaissance of the arts and crafts movement in America. While new mass-production methods of the early 20th century allowed for economically produced goods, they also had the effect of diminishing the workers’ connection with the products they were creating. The American arts and crafts movement sought to restore to the workers a sense of pride in their work by giving back to them creative control from start to finish.

About the techniques used in making these tiles:

Cuerda Seca – a technique using raised clay lines to create wells for glaze colors that would otherwise bleed together.

Cuerda Seca Cloisonne – after a first firing the surface is sanded flat to reveal the clay between the various glazes, then refired.

Sgraffito – incised lines scratched or press molded into moist clay to create a design by exposing the clay beneath the glaze.

Bas-Relief – a sculptural technique in which slightly raised areas stand out against the surrounding surface, giving the design a sense of dimension.
